How to See the Yosemite Firefall in 2025 (Best Spot, Timing & Tips)

One of the most incredible natural events in the U.S. happens every February in Yosemite National Park — the Yosemite Firefall. For just a few days each year, the setting sun hits Horsetail Fall at the perfect angle, lighting it up like it's glowing lava.

Here’s everything you need to know to see it for yourself.

Where’s the Best Spot to See the Firefall?

The best place to view the Yosemite Firefall is from the El Capitan Picnic Area along Northside Drive in Yosemite Valley. From here, you’ll get a direct line of sight to Horsetail Fall, where the magic happens at sunset.

Other spots with partial views:

  • Southside Drive pullouts

  • Cathedral Picnic Area

  • Cooks Meadow (for long-lens photographers)

When to See the Yosemite Firefall

The Firefall usually occurs mid-to-late February, with the best chances around February 15–25, depending on conditions. The phenomenon only lasts about 10 minutes at sunset, and several conditions must align:

  • Clear skies to the west at sunset

  • Enough snowmelt or runoff for Horsetail Fall to flow

  • Right angle of sunlight (usually around 5:15–5:45 PM)

Pro Tip: Check Yosemite’s official website for daily updates on visibility.

How to Prepare for the Firefall

Because this event has gotten very popular in recent years, you'll need to plan ahead:

  • Arrive early: Parking lots fill by noon or earlier

  • Bring layers: It’s cold in February — bundle up

  • Use a headlamp for hiking back after dark

  • Tripod & zoom lens for the best photos

  • Portable chairs/blanket if you’re staying for hours

  • Snacks & water (there are no food vendors nearby)

No cell service — download maps offline!

Parking & Permits (IMPORTANT)

Since 2023, Yosemite requires reservations or day-use entry permits during Firefall weeks. You'll also likely need to walk 1.5–2 miles from designated parking zones.

Photography Tip:

Use a telephoto lens (200mm+), shoot RAW, and manually expose for the highlights. Arrive early and set up by 4:00 PM to claim your spot.
